Post Hydroseed Lawn Care Guide

1. Watering (Most Important Factor)

Day 1- Do not water until the mulch dries and sets. This allows the hydroseed mat to bond to the soil.

Days 2–14 (sometimes up to 28 days)- Water 2–3 times per day depending on weather. Keep soil consistently moist, never soaked. Ideal times: early morning & early afternoon. Avoid evening watering to reduce fungus risk.

For Hot, Windy, or Full-Sun Areas, Increase frequency (shorter cycles). Wind and sandy soil cause fast evaporation.

For Cool, Cloudy, or Rainy Days, Reduce or skip watering if soil remains moist. No puddles or runoff as this can wash the seed away.

For Humidity Warning (Common Near the Coast), If humidity is high, allow lawn to dry slightly between cycles. Standing moisture overnight can cause fungal disease.

2. Germination Expectations (Cool-Season Grass)

  • Ryegrass: 5–7 days, Fescue: 7–14 days, Bluegrass: 14–28 days

Patience is important. Uneven germination is normal at first, especially between sun and shade.

3. Mowing Guidelines

Wait till grass reaches about 3 inches before first cut. Cut with blades set to 2.25–2.5 inches. Remember

never remove more than ⅓ of the grass height as this could stress the grass. It’s best to avoid mowing when soil is wet.

Leaving grass slightly taller the first season helps roots establish in especially in sandy soils.

4. Fertilizer & Weed Control

Hydroseed includes starter fertilizer lasting 3–5 weeks. Apply follow-up fertilizer at week 3–4 (CRITICAL). Recommend Using starter fertilizer with Mesotrione (Meso) if needed. Meso is safe for new grass! Do NOT apply weed control until lawn has been mowed 4–5 times. Continue feeding every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.

5. Traffic & Use

Remember the grass is new and still trying to establish root systems. Keep foot traffic off the lawn for at least 4 weeks. No pets, vehicles, or heavy equipment. Avoid turning mower wheels sharply during early mowing.

Seasonal Tips

Spring-

  • Watch for cold nights reduce watering if growth slows.

  • Overseed thin spots once soil warms consistently.

Summer-

  • Transition to deep watering 1–3 times per week once established.

  • Water early mornings only.

  • Raise mowing height slightly during heat stress.

Fall (Ideal Hydroseeding Season)

  • Maintain moisture but avoid oversaturation.

  • Cooler temps = slower evaporation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid!

❌ Overwatering
❌ Evening watering
❌ Walking on new grass
❌ Mowing too low
❌ Applying weed killer too early
